Based on advice from industry experts, including Ideal Home, Kelly Hoppen and Alexander James Interior Design, we’ve identified the key trends for autumn. Get ahead of the curve and follow these styling tips for creating an autumnal sanctuary at home.

1) 2018 is the year of leather and velvet

From decadent velvet armchairs to unique quilted headboards and sleek leather sofas, adding texture is a great way to add detail and ensure your home is in-keeping with autumn’s upcoming trends.

Not only do these key pieces fill a room with character, they switch up the feel of your interiors and give it an immediately homely atmosphere. ‘Meticulous attention to detail creates a completely bespoke design that is both practical and luxurious’, says renowned interior designer, Kelly Hoppen, so it’s well worth investing in rich textures to optimise your home for the coming season.

2) Teal and turquoise are the colours of the moment

Colour trends move quickly in the world of interior design, and this year it’s out with pretty Millennial Pink, and in with deeper, darker tones inspired by the sea. According to Ideal Home, rich hints of teal, turquoise and indigo are set to ‘make a splash’ in 2018, and deliver a sophisticated touch to your interiors.

Popular for its cooling and calming qualities, turquoise is a fitting colour choice for patterned bathroom tiles, where a feature wall adds a stylish touch to a walk-in shower. Darker blues can also be used more subtly across linens and bedroom accessories, where deep indigo cushions and navy throws help transition your home’s colour palette into the cosier autumn months.

3) Take inspiration from international influences 

From eye-catching Moroccan tiles to the beautiful colours and textures inspired by far-away cities in Rajasthan, 2018 is the year of fusion furnishings. Materials this autumn are set to have a natural and raw feel, so introduce versatile elements of hessian and wicker.
 
‘Earthy shades of clay, terracotta and ochre’ will provide the base to intricate paisley patterns and traditional block printing, creating a rich, warm and autumnal trend rooted in culture. Ideal Home’s Tamara Kelly says it’s all about ‘global-inspired prints’ and ‘tactile fabrics’ that will play a key role this season.

4) Use tiles to make a statement

A feature floor or unique statement wall is a sure-fire way to inject some personality into your home, and 2018 is the year to do just that.

Sleek marble mosaics and composite stone tiles in a myriad of colourways add artisanal detail to kitchen worktops and walls, and as Alice Howarth of the Evening Standard points out, ‘can add an incredible edge to any room’. Popular in the 60s and 70s, the limitless colour combinations that flecked styles like Terrazzo accommodate have seen feature tiles re-emerge as one of 2018’s most sought-after trends.

5) Make way for the new metallics

Rose gold accents and touches of copper may have been the must-have interior trend of 2017, but this year, it’s all about rich industrial tones. True gold, traditional brass and polished nickel are dominating the metallic scene this autumn, and their timeless tones can add a touch of class throughout the whole house.

From lounge accessories like striking mirrors and elegant lamps, to shining art deco bathroom cabinets, introducing these decadent tones will make your home feel warm and inviting, just in time for autumn. Alexander James Interior Design recommends pairing classic gold pieces with aubergine tones to ‘transform your space into a fashionable and regal abode’. This rich colour palette with metallic accents exudes sophistication and warms the home ‘with sumptuous effect.’
