Unique experiences in a picture-perfect county

As lockdown restrictions begin to ease and temperatures rise, now is the time to start exploring Cornwall safely. Although holidays will be a little different this year, there are still plenty of ways to embrace the great outdoors with family-friendly days out.

Whether you’re looking for quieter walking routes or an open-air theatre by the sea, the county has so many unforgettable outdoor experiences – all of which can be enjoyed whilst following social distancing guidelines. For a touch of inspiration, we’ve handpicked our top five things to do in Cornwall this summer.

1. Your very first open-air theatre experience

Built into the side of a rugged Cornish cliff, the Minack Theatre in Porthcurno is a must-visit. Dreamt-up by Rowena Cade, this ‘theatre under the stars’ promises a one-of-a-kind experience.

The line-up for the next few months includes Fisherman’s Friends, Educating Rita and The Wind in the Willows, amongst many others. View the full itinerary on the Minack’s website.

To limit numbers, Minack are only accepting advanced bookings and the indoor spaces are currently remaining closed. On a positive note, these adjustments provide a unique opportunity for visitors to appreciate the natural beauty of the theatre in an uncrowded atmosphere.

2. Park up at a retro outdoor cinema

From beach screenings to cave viewings, vintage outdoor cinemas are popping up all over Cornwall this summer.

Between 6th-16th August, Paul Ainsworth is bringing the Drive and Dine Theatre to the Royal Cornwall Showground near Wadebridge. The screenings pay ode to the classic American drive-in cinema experience with a bespoke menu to match, including fondue nachos and hot dogs. Simply pull up, pop the handbrake on, and enjoy award-winning blockbusters from your car.

Brand new for 2020, Dairyland Farm World in Newquay will be celebrating the warmer weather with a drive-in cinema. Kicking off at the end of July with Rocketman, there are also some Disney favourites, old classics and sing-along musicals in the pipeline.

Hosted in venues across Cornwall, Open Air Cinema UK are organising retro summer screenings in beautiful locations. Water babies will enjoy watching Moana or Jaws on Polzeath Beach, while the adventurers can cosy up at Carnglaze Caverns for Indiana Jones.

3. Hit your daily step goal with a long walk

It’s often easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. However, for many people, the past few months have highlighted the importance of finding time for outdoor walks.

For a quieter footfall, the ‘three sides of the Lizard’ is a moderate walk, following tall cliffs and passing the southernmost point of mainland Britain. Sprinkled with migrant wildlife and historical talking points, view the full details here to start planning your day.

For those adventuring in North Cornwall, the Trebarwith Valley circular walk is a lovely alternative to the busier routes. Following the stream from Jeffrey’s Pit, through bluebell woods, and emerging at the top of Trebarwith Valley, revel in the peaceful view that it brings over the small Cornish hamlet of Trewarmett.

4. Fill the pantry with handpicked goods

Following the challenges many local businesses faced during lockdown, it’s now the perfect time to start supporting Cornish farms, independent shops and ‘pick-your-owns’.

Open between June and September, Mitchell Fruit Garden near Newquay is a great choice for filling up on crisp and sweet Cornish berries.

In West Cornwall, Trevaskis Farm is nestled among 28 acres of blossoming countryside. Open daily from 8am-7pm, fruit and vegetables currently in season include various berries and currants, and two types of pea.

5. Amble around a National Trust favourite

Since the gradual reopening of indoor and outdoor spaces, the National Trust has introduced new rules and restrictions to ensure visitors can enjoy their destinations safely. These include staggered entry times, an advance booking policy and one-way systems.

Glendurgan Garden is a peaceful valley in Falmouth, with big leaves and exotic flowers that liken the lower valley’s character to a tropical jungle. Sun-worshippers can relax on the upper banks with a takeaway drink and snack from the teahouse.

Another favourite spot is Lanhydrock near Bodmin, where ancient woodlands and riverside paths make for a peaceful stroll. Finish your day with a takeaway treat from the Park Café.
