Hidden heritage and shimmering coves

Cornwall's stunning coastline is dotted with some of the UK's most beautiful beaches and the area around Porthleven is no exception. With golden sands, hidden coves and dramatic cliffs, there’s so much to explore. Whether it’s wildlife-watching, sea swimming or a family beach day that you’re after, here are six must-visit beaches in and around the Lizard Peninsula…

1.    Porthleven Beach

Porthleven Beach is a favourite among surfers and beach lovers alike. Stretching from the historic harbour, the beach offers a mix of pebbles and sand, with waves perfect for those looking to catch a surf. The beach is backed by dramatic cliffs and offers stunning sunset views, making it a perfect spot for an evening stroll after supper at Amelies

During low tide, explore the rock pools teeming with marine life or search for shells on the damp sand. What’s more, it’s dog-friendly all year round, making it ideal for a family day out with plenty of space to play, swim and enjoy the Cornish sun.

Overlooking this beautiful beach is Salt Spray. Mere footsteps from the sand, this coastal bolthole provides an incredible base for exploring West Cornwall with sea views awaiting your return each day.

2. Nichols Cove

Nestled between cliffs and accessible via the South West Coast Path, Nichols Cove is a hidden gem for those seeking tranquillity. This small, secluded cove is a beautiful spot for swimming and snorkelling in its clear waters and its sheltered position makes it a peaceful retreat from busier beaches nearby. Perfect for a romantic picnic or a quiet afternoon of reading and relaxing, Nichols Cove offers a slice of serene Cornish beauty off the beaten track.

We recommend reaching Nichols Cove by walking from Porthleven’s Harbour, along the headland and past Breageside Cross. Extend your route and continue along the path towards Wheal Prosper Tin Mine and down onto Rinsey Cove. Please note that access can be tricky, so it’s best suited to those comfortable with a bit of a climb.

On your return back into Porthleven, head to one of the harbourside pubs for a drink in the sunshine and a traditional fish and chip supper. Just a short walk from the harbour is The Old School House. Sleeping up to 10 guests and enjoying glistening sea views and a modern games room, this home exudes a timeless charm moments from the sand.

3. Dollar Cove, Gunwalloe

Lifted straight from the pages of Poldark, Gunwalloe is a beach that combines natural beauty with historic charm. Known for its medieval church that sits right on the sand, this beach offers a unique backdrop for a day by the sea. The sandy beach is ideal for families, with safe swimming areas and plenty of space for rounders and cricket too. Explore the rock pools or take a walk along the scenic coastal path towards Poldhu Beach – where a little café selling pastries and ice cream awaits.

With a National Trust car park nearby, Gunwalloe’s Dollar Cove is easily accessible and a great spot for a relaxing beach day with all the family, including your four-legged friends.

4. Porthcew, Rinsey Cove

Rinsey Cove, also known as Porthcew, is a rugged and unspoiled beach located beneath the cliffs near Rinsey Head and Wheal Prosper Tin Mine. The beach itself is ideal for swimming with calm shores and crystal-clear waters, while the surrounding cliffs provide a dramatic backdrop and excellent hiking opportunities with panoramic coastal and sunset views.

Less frequented than other beaches, Rinsey Cove is ideal for those looking to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in the Lizard’s incredible scenery. Be mindful of the tides and park at the top of the hill before taking to the rugged coast path – this small cove can also be found by walking from Praa Sands or Prussia Cove, depending on how far you’d like to extend your route.

5. Kynance Cove

One of Cornwall's most picturesque beaches, Kynance Cove is renowned for its turquoise waters, white sands and striking serpentine rock formations. Located on the Lizard Peninsula, this National Trust beach offers stunning views with a café selling cream teas perched above the cove.

The walk down to the beach is as beautiful as the cove itself, with plenty of photo opportunities along the way. Popular with families, swimmers and sunbathers, Kynance Cove can get busy, especially in summer, so it's best to visit early or late in the day to enjoy its beauty at its very best.

For those tempted by warmer waters, Seathrift and its outdoor pool sits just a short drive away in Porthleven. Also enjoying incredible ocean views and stunning boho surf interiors, a stay here promises to leave you feeling rested and rejuvenated.

6. Praa Sands

Loved for its long stretch of golden sand backed by dunes, Praa Sands (pronounced ‘pray’) is a favourite for both locals and visitors due to its easy access and soft sands. The Blue Flag beach offers excellent conditions for surfing and bodyboarding, with lifeguards on duty during the summer months too. Hire suits and boards from Global Boarders or opt to book in for coasteering, kayaking or giant SUPing.

There are plenty of amenities close by, including the SISU café, Praa Sands beach shop and toilets too, making it a convenient spot for a full family day out. Once evening arrives, head into the nearby village for supper at The Welloe or return to Porthleven for small plates by the sea. Dog restrictions apply at Praa Sands during peak season, so be sure to check before bringing your four-legged friends with you.
