Blending cool Scandi interiors with a breath-taking coastal backdrop, Gwelefan is a stunning property nestled above Porthtowan Beach adored by The British Travel List and Luxurious Magazine. Designed by Cornwall’s Kast Architects, this timber-clad home has been carefully composed to maximize its views out to sea, while using natural and eco-conscious materials. Enjoying spa-like facilities inside and out, you’ll find a luxurious sauna and a sea-view hot tub, along with an elevated balcony and ground floor terrace for wave-watching.
Elegantly set across one floor, the kitchen, living and dining area encourages everyone to gather together. Finished in ocean teals and earthy exposed woods, the interiors complement the sea views that await just beyond vast sliding glass doors. Perfect for sociable dining, the repurposed table seats 10 guests, with the contemporary wood-clad kitchen within easy reach. Spill out onto the balcony during summer, or retreat to the living area after supper for golden orange sunsets.
The ground floor is home to all four bedrooms. Minimal in design yet instantly welcoming, they echo the same beautiful interiors woven throughout the house, with wooden floors, monochrome fixings, and fresh artwork lining the walls. To the front of the house, three bedrooms open onto the sea-view terrace, hot tub and dog-friendly lawn, through sliding doors that welcome in the sea breeze.
There are two gorgeous king size bedrooms and another with a zip and link bed, providing flexibility for different group make-ups. The fourth bedroom features bunk beds with a king size bed on the bottom and a single on top. This, coupled with a PlayStation 4, makes it perfect for younger guests. The family bathroom encourages mid-holiday indulgence thanks to a walk-in waterfall shower, bath tub and private sauna.
With Porthtowan’s family-friendly beach within walking distance, it's easy to spend days here skimming stones in its shallow waters, swimming in its tidal pools or surfing its sheltered tides. The Blue Bar and Porthtowan Beach Café both offer relaxed dining options, while St Agnes is a 10 minute drive away and home to the sought-after Peterville Inn and Tap House. Loved for its watersports scene, there’s board hire available from Tris Surf as well as SUP tours, coasteering and kayaking tours – all bookable through our inclusive concierge service.

Food and drink
Though small in size, Porthtowan isn’t short of cafés, pubs and nearby restaurants. For a relaxed beachfront dining experience, head to The Blue Bar. A stone’s throw from the sand, it enjoys lovely views over the waves. During the summer months, order fish tacos, loaded fries and halloumi salads from Porthtowan Beach Café before sampling something sweet from the Moomaid of Zennor ice cream hut. Or, satisfy your seaside cravings at Seasmiths fish and chip shop, where the catch of the day can be enjoyed from your favourite spot on the beach.
In nearby St Agnes, you’ll also find the delightful Peterville Inn. Renowned for its Sunday lunches and contemporary pub suppers, this should certainly be on your ‘to-dine’ list during a stay. Schooners and The Tap House are also worth a visit, with both offering plenty of local wines and ales, served alongside delicious pizzas, small plates and fresh seafood.
Activities for children
Fantastic for families with a range of local activities, woodlands and historical landmarks nearby, there’s plenty to keep children entertained. Explore the whimsical world of Heartlands in Redruth, where history, play and discovery intertwine to create a family-friendly day out. There’s a botanical garden, mining museum and an indoor soft play area, as well as a café for day-trippers. A haven for skateboarders and BMX enthusiasts, you’ll also find Mount Hawke Skate Park nearby, or for an authentic farm experience, head to Callestick Farm, where children can meet the animals and sample delicious ice cream made on-site.
Outdoor pursuits
The surrounding scenery of Porthtowan is shaped by Cornwall’s rich mining heritage and windswept coastlines. The South West Coast Path can be accessed within moments and leads you over to Chapel Porth Beach in one direction and Portreath in the other. Popular with Poldark fans, the coast path takes you to Wheal Coates and over to St Agnes Head, where the ancient mine sits perched on the cliff edge. Also loved by wildlife watchers for its swallows, warblers and choughs, be sure to take your binoculars when exploring this beautiful part of the coastline.
Beaches and watersports
A paradise for beach-lovers, Porthtowan’s Blue Flag shores are perfect for sunbathing, rock pooling and sandcastle building. Also home to its own crystal-clear tidal pool, sea swimmers will love taking to the waters for morning dips away from the waves. With a good surfing scene too, it’s perfect for beginners. Sheltered by the two headlands, take to the salty seas on boards hired from Tris or Eskinzo. The shallow swell can also be enjoyed by little ones on bodyboards and when the tides allow, head out on a SUP tour or kayaking adventure with Global Boarders.
Festivals and events
Porthtowan comes alive with a vibrant calendar of festivals and events. Taking place every July and enjoying an incredible ocean backdrop, Tropical Pressure is a small, family-friendly festival sure to play a lot of reggae and funk music. Known by locals as ‘St Aggie Carnival’, the streets of St Agnes enjoy a buzzing procession of local bands, fancy dress and colourful floats every August. With many visiting from far and wide to watch the carnival go by, there’s something beautifully unique about this event that makes it well worth a visit. Other dates for your diary include Healy’s Rattler Fest, The Watering Hole’s Tunes in the Dunes and The Little Orchard Festival in Penhallow.

From first opening the door we felt a home-from-home atmosphere. The glass wall enabled us to enjoy the sea and sky views from indoors and everywhere was spotless. We were happy to use the hot tub and sauna. The small things including the welcome hamper and a basket of towels for the beach and tub were much appreciated.
