Gently sparkling wines and exquisite small-plate menus

When it comes to wine, Devon offers an enticing blend of tradition and innovation, with vineyards and wineries tucked away in some of the county’s most scenic spots. From the rolling hills of the South Hams to the breath-taking sea-view pastures on the outskirts of Croyde, these idyllic estates produce award-winning English wines that rival international favourites.

Whether you’re a connoisseur or simply enjoy a glass of something special, here are the best that Devon has to offer.

Location: Stoke Gabriel, South Devon

Good to know: step-free entrance and dog-friendly

Set near the idyllic River Dart, Sandridge Barton is renowned for its award-winning English wines and commitment to sustainability. The estate’s Circa restaurant, housed in a charming stone milking parlour, is the perfect place to sample exquisitely paired wines alongside small plates like wild garlic dumplings and fallow deer carpaccio.

Sandridge Barton prides itself on its eco-friendly practices, including the use of solar panels and rainwater harvesting in their production. You can explore this stunning site on a vineyard safari or opt for a self-guided tour if you prefer to take things at your own pace. Whether you stay for a meal or simply a tasting, you'll be surrounded by breath-taking views all the while.

Good to know: step-free entrance and dog-friendly

Nestled in the heart of South Devon, near Bigbury-on-Sea, the award-winning Calancombe Estate offers a luxurious experience for wine enthusiasts. The estate's “Grand Tour & Lunch” is a must-do, where you can enjoy a guided walk through the vines followed by a delicious meal in their restaurant.

The menu features dishes perfectly paired with estate wines, like grilled peach burrata and Darts Farm lamb cutlets. For something sweeter, indulge in the “Grand Celebration Tea”; an afternoon tea complete with Calancombe's sparkling Blanc de Noirs. It's the ideal spot to sip, savour and take in the picturesque surroundings with your four-legged friend by your side.

Good to know: step-free entrance, gluten and dairy-free menus available and dog-friendly

Perched on the edge of Dartmoor, Alder Vineyard offers a hands-on and immersive experience for wine-lovers. Join an expert winemaker on a tour that takes you from planting the vines to labelling the bottles, providing a fascinating insight into the making process and what influences the flavours of each variety.

For an extra special evening, book the "Sunset Winemaker Tour and Supper" to enjoy a private tasting as the sun dips below the horizon. Afterwards, stay for a bite to eat in the on-site kitchen and bar, where you can tuck into Devonshire cheeses and decadent open sandwiches. For early risers, they also serve a hearty breakfast, with gluten and dairy-free options on offer.

Saunton Vineyard

Location: Braunton, North Devon

Good to know: dog-friendly

Just a stone’s throw from the golden bays of Saunton Sands and Croyde, Saunton Vineyard is a hidden gem in North Devon. With stunning views over Braunton Burrows, this independent, boutique vineyard is as welcoming as it is scenic.

Despite its relatively recent opening in 2019, Saunton Vineyard already produces a range of still, sparkling and pét nat wines from its south-west facing vines. Summer sees the vineyard come alive with pop-up foodie events and live music, creating a fun, laid back atmosphere for those late afternoon sips. And with easy access onto the Tarka Trail nearby, it makes the perfect pitstop to relax with a glass of wine in hand.
