Nestled on the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall, St Mawes is a picturesque village on the eastern side of the River Fal. Overlooking the glistening Fal Estuary, it’s known for its stunning views, gentle sailing conditions and tranquil coastal atmosphere.
From excellent watersports opportunities to charming coastal walks, St Mawes offers an excellent variety of activities for visitors. After a day spent wandering the town’s pastel streets dipping into Da Bara bakery, boutiques and beachside restaurants, head over to St Mawes Castle. A coastal fortress, owned by King Henry VIII, brimming with heritage and stunning views over the estuary.
Stroll along the picturesque harbour or spend a day on Summer’s Beach where you can hire kayaks or take a cruise along the river, spotting seals and the occasional dolphin along the way.
Alternatively, hop on the St Mawes Ferry from the harbour and head over to Falmouth for the day. The neighbouring town sits just over the waterway and has an abundance of restaurants, bars and cafés to call into while you’re exploring.
Bursting with fresh local produce, first class eateries and traditional pubs, St Mawes is often referred to as Cornwall’s new foodie capital. For a hearty meal or drink in the sunshine, we’d recommend paying a visit to the Rising Sun or the Victory Inn – both receive glowing reviews for their harbourside views and seafood dishes.
The village is also home to a variety of shops, including interior boutiques, artisan delis and local art galleries.
Boasting an exceptional foodie scene, St Mawes offers fine dining and laid back menus in equal measure. For a touch of elegance, The Idle Rocks enjoys stunning waterfront views, a decadent cocktail menu and an exquisite seafood menu. Hotel Tresanton combines stylish surroundings with a fresh, local menu and the Ship and Castle serves classic pub fare alongside a beautiful view of the harbour.
Along the coast in Porthcurnick is The Hidden Hut. Loved for their feast nights, vibrant salads and hearty soups, this little café on the beach is a must when visiting the Roseland Peninsula.
