£1550Recommendations for the South West
Brimming with excellent surf, enchanting moorland, rich heritage and picturesque harboursides, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to holidaying in the South West. While our recommendations are endless, we suggest starting with Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, with some of the most popular towns being St Ives, Mawgan Porth, Newquay, Padstow, Salcombe, Bantham and Dartmouth.
Whether you’re looking for a family beach day, excellent surf, or a fantastic dog walk, the beaches along the South West are considered some of the best in Europe. In Cornwall, Fistral, Crantock, Mawgan Porth and Polzeath are popular with surfers and families alike. Each offers long stretches of soft sand, great restaurants, facilities, surf hire, and nearby dog walks. The beaches of Porthmeor in St Ives and Gwithian in Hayle are ideal for long, scenic walks and provide perfect conditions for watersports.
Those wishing to sail, SUP, or swim will love the beaches of Daymer Bay, Trevone, and Readymoney Cove. With idyllic tidal pools and gentle waves, these bays offer a more relaxed atmosphere. Additionally, the South West Coast Path provides easy access to Rock, Padstow, and Fowey, respectively.
Travelling into Devon, Hope Cove, Bantham Beach, and Bigbury-on-Sea earn their merits for beautiful scenery, glistening waters, and soft sands. Meanwhile, Salcombe’s estuarine beaches attract visitors from far and wide – sail, swim, or stroll along the Kingsbridge estuary, stopping for lunch at one of the beachside eateries.
Renowned for its historical landmarks, notable walking routes and literary links, the South West has something for everyone. Walk in the footsteps of Raynor Winn with the famous South West Coast Path weaving its way through Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset, or visit Daphne Du Maurier’s muse; the harbourside village of Fowey in South Cornwall.
Devon is also home to Agatha Christie’s Burgh Island, where a sea tractor will transport you from the sandy beach to the island.
In Cornwall, history enthusiasts will enjoy exploring the legendary Tintagel Castle, said to be the birthplace of King Arthur, and the enchanting St Micheal’s Mount – a tidal island with a medieval castle and giant folklore. Just along the coast, you’ll find The Minack Theatre, Land’s End and the Tate St Ives.
Further inland, spend days wandering the tropical biomes of the Eden Project or explore the stunning gardens of Trebah, Heligan and Glendurgan.
The region is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, long-standing traditions, and beautiful scenery. In Cornwall, you’ll find world-famous surfing beaches and a vibrant seafood scene, with fresh off-the-boat catches taking pride of place on many menus. Both Devon and Cornwall are celebrated for their cream teas.
With a friendly rivalry over whether to put jam or cream first, the clotted cream and scones have become a must-try delicacy in both counties.
Somerset is known for its traditional cider and cosy village pubs, offering a true taste of the county’s apple orchards. It’s also home to the Glastonbury Festival, which attracts visitors from all over the globe every June.
The counties are also home to iconic landmarks such as the Eden Project, Land’s End, Cheddar Gorge and Dartmouth Castle. Bodmin Moor, Dartmoor and Exmoor are well worth a visit, with dramatic landscapes, tors, stargazing sites and hidden woodlands to uncover.
And finally, no visit to the South West would be complete without sampling a traditional Cornish pasty.
